March Promotion

As many would know, we ran a promotion whereby the uploading of 20 jobs resulted in MYOB Accountants Resourcing funding a trip for one of your staff to Kuala Lumpur . We are pleased that a number of firms have taken up this opportunity and we will be welcoming visiting staff during April.

It is always a pleasure to have our clients visit and if you are passing through Kuala Lumpur or nearby please feel free to contact us to arrange a visit to our office and a meeting with our staff.

This promotion has been a resounding success in enabling accounting practices around Australia to meet the taxation lodgement deadlines looming for March and May.

We are also able to have one of our KL staff spend a week or so at your office to help in building stronger relationships with your staff and in understanding your work flow processes.   The first such visit sees Audrey Tan attending the offices of one of our clients in Sydney next month.

Opportunity to Amend Superannuation Fund Tax Returns

We have been advised by BGL, the providers of the Simple Fund superannuation software that they have changed the way Simple Fund calculates capital losses and carries forward those losses for pension members with unsegregated assets. Previous versions of Simple Fund applied the actuarial percentage against the losses. Capital losses can be carried forward in full and offset against future capital gains. It is not a requirement of taxation law that the actuarial percentage be applied to net capital gains in the same way that it is applied to ordinary income. Essentially this means that a capital loss is not required to be apportioned. Some references supporting this view are Section 283 of ITAA36 and ATO Publication NAT15437.

It may be possible therefore for some of your clients to enjoy the benefits of an amended income tax return in relation to any under application of capital losses for funds which had unsegregated pension assets. This means that an opportunity exists for certain clients which have member accounts in accumulation and pension phases. If you wish to discuss this opportunity please do not hesitate to contact Bruce Coombes directly on 02 9089 9188.
